Ken Scott writes…
I was told the following story about Georgina on a recent visit to Peru and write it with permission. The story is testimony to the goodness of our God.
My wife Jeannie remembers Georgina some years ago as a student in the Women’s Study course in the Tacna Seminary. In recent years, however, Georgina had fallen ill with cancer and was required to travel repeatedly to Arequipa (nine hours away by bus), at her own expense, if she wished to be treated. During the treatments she often felt so ill that she was not able to read, pray or attend church so, before she had travelled to the clinic alone, she asked Ruben Mendoza, the director of the BM Radio Station in Tacna, to record some radio programmes onto a little digital audio device (MP3 player).
Ruben’s wife Rosa also has to travel constantly to seek medical help for their son Samuel (now eleven years of age) who had been born paralysed from the waist down. She went recently to Arequipa with Samuel for his ongoing care and while there met Georgina in the hospital. She was there alone – no one in her family is a Christian – but Georgina joyously raised her hand showing her little MP3 player and exclaimed to Rosa: ‘This is my spiritual lifeline. If I didn’t have this I don’t know what I would do. The Lord has blessed me so much as I listen to the programmes Ruben recorded’.
On return to Tacna, Rosa shared the story with Ruben, who broke down in tears. On seeing his reaction Rosa wanted to know why he wasn’t full of joy. Ruben replied: ‘when Georgina asked me to copy the programmes I could hardly be bothered to do it for her because I was so busy. I found it a real chore to do so and I feel so rebuked by the Lord. Yet, I am glad that the Lord has blessed her so’.
