York Road Baptist Fellowship continues to be a light in a dark place as they share the gospel in a needy area of the City of Belfast. Sam Best is supported by his good wife Shirley and a group of committed labourers who are dedicated to the task of reaching out into their neighbourhood with the Lord's help. Sam's zeal continues unabated since the Lord laid the burden on his heart 20 years ago.
Sam was converted in 1957 in Motherwell (Scotland) influenced by a godly lady whose lifestyle was distinctly different. He has been a member of Cliftonpark Baptist since 1964 and served for a period of time as elder. He attended Belfast Bible College from 1979-1982 and graduated having completed the three year course.
The work in York Road resulted from Sam's burden and vision for the area and started in 1990 in the York Road Community Centre under the name ‘Baptist Friendly Hour'. The work soon grew and moved to premises across the road in 1991 and became known as York Road Baptist Fellowship. The fellowship reaches out to the community in practical and friendly ways to the community and, more recently, they are also making connections with the Polish community who have moved into the area.
Today the work is maintained by a small but faithful group of believers whose desire is that the gospel will triumph in the hearts of many who are troubled and who are often damaged and disillusioned with the world of chaos and confusion in which we live.
Hopes and aspirations:
- God will break through and touch hearts and change lives
- Healing of the heartache and pain which sin often bringsThe fellowship appreciates the prayers of our Association of Churches, the practical support they receive; and those who call into the fellowship to encourage the work.
- They hope in the not too distant future to hold a praise night and also a men's breakfast.
- There is a need for others to be involved in this vital ministry where there is great need and real opportunity
It is hoped through these means that those who come will respond to the good news of Jesus Christ as the York Road Baptist Fellowship seeks to share the good news of God's amazing race.
