Acts 17:2       “He reasoned with them from the Scriptures…explaining and proving that Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ.  Some…were persuaded..17:13 “Paul was preaching the word of God at Berea” 17:17   “he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the God fearing Greeks. 17:18 Paul was preaching the Good news. 18:4 Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.

These verses from Acts show Paul at work sharing Christ wherever people were to be found. This is always the business of mission. The words used here show something of the struggle of communicating God’s truth.

Paul thought about things, pondered them and then engaged truth against error. God’s truth must war against error! Our battle is not against flesh and blood, it is a battle of ideas and we must be prepared to engage in this war about ideas presenting God’s message in clear terms.

We are to persuade, to win over, to bring a change of mind. Paul was not content to leave people in error. He entered into argument and debate because he wanted to persuade people towards Christ. We need to be careful here and remember that the force of our arguments must be empowered by the Holy Spirit before conversion can occur.

We are to declare the Gospel of Good news about Jesus in its fullness.  This includes teaching about God, sin, judgement, repentance or Lordship. We must tell people that they are without hope unless the Lord saves them. The reality is that good news is the best news to those who feel hopeless without it. To those convinced that their sin will condemn them, the message about forgiveness and substitution is wonderful!
